Strictly, the word abstract is to withdraw or to separate from something else.
Such term could also be applied to art that’s based on landscape, figure or object in which forms have been schematized or simplified.
In addition to that, it’s applied to art that is using forms like gestural marks or geometric shapes which have no source in external visual reality. There are artists who are purely creating abstract arts who prefer terms like concrete art or non-objective art. But in practice, the term abstract is being used across the board and distinction isn’t always that obvious.

Basically speaking, abstract art is carrying moral dimension in a way that it could be seen to stand for virtues similar to simplicity, spirituality and purity. At the end of the day, it will fall on how people look at the art itself.
